After running two successful seasons in the A/FX class running both the Altered Wheelbase 1965 Belvedere and 1966 Barracuda, Buddy Martin was informed by Chrysler racing boss Bob Cahill that there would be a shift in Chrysler’s focus on their drag program for 1967.
“The last time I checked, we don’t sell Fuel Altered Funny Cars,” stated Cahill in a meeting with Buddy Martin in late 1966. With that, Sox & Martin began the 1967 season campaigning a HEMI Belvedere II ‘RO’ Package Car along with a 440-powered GTX to promote Plymouth’s latest muscle car.
The 1967 HEMI Belvedere II scored a victory that year at the NHRA SpringNationals in Bristol, TN. This also marked the beginning of the Sox & Martin Plymouth Supercar Clinic program that toured the country and displayed performance parts, race cars, and the latest performance vehicles from Plymouth.
