As the new Pro Stock class made its debut in 1970, Sox & Martin began the season campaigning a 1970 Plymouth HEMI ‘Cuda. But by spring of that year, the team expanded their racing operations and built a HEMI-Powered 1970 Plymouth Duster Pro Stocker to promote Plymouth’s latest model.
With the new Duster, team owner Buddy Martin once again reached out to Herb McCandless and offered him a fulltime job with team to not only drive the Duster, but to also assist lead mechanic Jake King on engine projects. Herb’s debut behind the wheel of the Duster netted him a runner-up finish at the 1970 NHRA Summernationals in York, PA.
However, Herb made history at the 1970 NHRA U.S. Nationals Labor Day weekend when he defeated one of the toughest Pro Stock fields and claimed victory for the Sox & Martin team.
